[00:00.10]My Friend in the Next Office|[00:03.17] When I started my job a year ago at the university,|[00:08.14] I did not know my way around.|[00:10.57] I did not know where to find anything.|[00:13.18] I had a million questions.|[00:15.35] But Dianne in the next office took me|[00:18.59] on a tour showing me the places to eat, the library,|[00:21.51] the lecture rooms, where to get a picture ID card,|[00:24.68] how to get from one building to another.|[00:27.42] When I had a question I asked Dianne:|[00:30.34] how to use the telephone, where to make copies,|[00:33.08] where to print with my computer,|[00:35.38] the location of my mailbox.|[00:37.37] She teaches as I do.|[00:39.30] We both spend a lot of time helping students|[00:42.28] and answering their questions.|[00:44.15] She giggles a lot; I hear her laugh with her students.|[00:47.61] Sometimes she asks my advice now about her work|[00:51.29] or about a problem and I ask her advice.|[00:54.77] Sometimes she comes in to my office and says|[00:57.26] " I'm really angry, can I whine to you?"|[01:00.99] Then she talks about a problem and I listen,|[01:04.41] and then she returns cheerfully to her office.|[01:07.77] Sometimes I go into her office and say.|[01:11.32] " I'm upset about something that happened;|[01:13.56] can I come in for a minute?"|[01:15.48] Then I grumble to her and she listens,|[01:18.47] and then I go back cheerfully to my office.|[01:21.45] Each of us feels better|[01:22.95] when we have shared our problems.|[01:24.81] Then they are no longer problems.|[01:27.43] Dianne is shy in a group of people.|[01:29.73] She is quiet and does not start a conversation.|[01:33.28] Everyone around her talks and she listens.|[01:37.20] On Friday afternoons, she makes popcorn for everyone.|[01:41.55] We all sit in the staff room|[01:43.79] and eat microwaved popcorn and drink tea and talk.|[01:48.14] We start to relax for the weekend|[01:50.76] and talk about our plans.|[01:52.74] She is a good friend; she helps my students|[01:56.04] when I am not there;|[01:57.35] she wishes me good luck when I go to a lecture.|[02:00.09] I am very glad|[02:01.27] that she can be my friend in the office beside mine.
